Ever see those crazy people who plan life. Plan for everything; meals, meal prep, workouts, working, playdates, park trips, Life! Well I have noticed, for my sanity, I am becoming one of those people. Without a plan and with the business that happens in life it is so easy to get stressed out over the simplest things like dinner! So simple but when you have school, swim, tball, dets, work schedules, house work, errands, and life, dinner can so easily turn into cereal, junk food, takeout, and/or panic over not having anything DE thawed from the freezer. Part of this whole #AGCountDownTo30 is also a huge part of #TheGroomsPurge. (Yes there will be a post haha) But part of this is meal prepping. Meal prepping can affect so much of your life more than just being ready for dinner. By meal prepping we are able to keep in check what we are eating, the money we are dishing out on our dishes, the money being thrown away every time we throw out old food or freezer burnt food. The biggest complaint I have heard since working with Advocare is people cannot afford to eat healthy. This is the number one way I can eat healthy and stay within our budget.
I meal plan based off of :
1. What we have in our freezer, fridge, and pantry first.
2. Sales adds. Now I know who really has time for all the flyers right?!? I know we get our group of flyers automatically (no I don't buy the paper or coupon adds though I am sure this would help a bunch) on Wednesdays. I take a quick look through the ones I know I get the best deals at or do our normal shopping. This is first Kroger (they have the best produce and is the closest grocery store), Aldi (cheapest items and also close but would not be able to get everything I need normally), and Sprouts (farthest away, best selection for healthy whole food items, but most expensive unless they have great deals). Normally I end up with the best selection I want at Kroger. I circle what I want mainly in the produce section.
3. Costco. I am a sucker for Costco. We do Costco at least once a month sometimes twice if we don't see much produce on sale in the adds. Our staples are frozen Kroger chicken breasts, ground turkey, romaine lettuce, bell or mini bell peppers, cucumbers, individual sabra hummus (though they recently changed their brand), organic eggs, milk, steel cut oats, pretzel crisps and veggie straws. Depending on when Costco sends out their coupon books there are other items that we stock up on like toilet paper, paper towels, Lysol or Clorox wipes, and Ziploc bags. They also have the best dog beds for our old pups who need good cushion for their hips and will last through our bull dog scratching the bed to get comfy.
SO I go through the adds when they come in on Wednesday determine what the best one is for my weekly shopping. A day that has free time between Wednesday and Sunday I sit down and figure it all out. Normally I do this closer to the weekend so I have a better idea of what we have left and if the veggies are still holding up good. So I make my list off of items 1-3. Dinners are planned either off of the normal recipes we use, cook books, or pinterest searching healthy clean eating.
Another part of the meal prepping for us is to avoid food waste. Dinner is planned as our lunch the next day. We cook enough for the boys dinner, and 2 meals for me and Darek. This makes it so we aren't scrambling the next day to make lunch and helps avoid eating out and spending more money or choosing eating junk.
To help avoid eating junk I also prep veggies and fruit for easy grab and go snacks. Make the food you have as easy to get to and appealing as possible. Cut and peal, put them as your first thing you see when you open the fridge.
On our meal planner I make a list of the items needed from the store to complete our meals. So after I check the adds, make my plan, make my shopping list off to the store we go!
